Family Recipe.

Food evokes memory. The senses awaken to the waft of familiar family fare when a recipe is described. Recollection of swinging the back door open in response to a distant call from mom declaring dinner’s ready followed by the joy experienced when on the dining table was a “not-so-refined” pile of red sauce coating a giant pile of ground beef and mashed potatoes. The taste hit my senses before the food reached my mouth. This three-ingredient recipe defines comfort food for my family.

There’s no name for it (as is true for most family recipes), Here’s how it’s made.

Ingredients: 1-2 cans of tomato soup + milk, ground beef (or Impossible meat), Mashed potatoes (with lots of butter, milk, salt, and pepper). Cook the ground beef until the pink disappears. Add the soup and milk to the cooked beef and stir until the sauce is smooth. Simmer for a few minutes. Make mashed potatoes (preferably mashed by hand so some lumps remain). When it’s ready to be served, spoon a big pile of mashed potatoes on the plate. Push down the center of the potatoes with a spoon to make a pool on the top. Scoop enough sauce into the pool on top so that the sauce overflows to the base of the potatoes. Dig in!

This is American comfort food packed with sentiment! Try it! Kids (and adults) will love it!
