Our bodies as architecture.

The way in which we position ourselves in relationship to others create patterns. Activity guides the way we build places with our bodies. Talking with a friend we stand face to face. Watching television or eating, we sit side by side. These patterns are innate. The activity directs our placement. The relationship impacts our proximity.

Two close friends sit across the table from each other leaning in to talk privately. Two acquaintances sit across from each other, leaning back comfortably, allowing space to create a permeable shield.

A husband and wife sit side by side in the pew, one arm draped across the others shoulders. Parishioners of the same congregation, but of no relation, sit side by side but at a distance from each other. The space gives permission for isolation in a sea of people.

Stand in the back of the room. Observe the patterns of the people. Their position and proximity reflect their relationship. Their bodies have built the space.
